Shaping Creativity with Jacob Cowan of TBD pottery

Nestled in the heart of Port Orchard, WA, there’s a place where clay becomes a canvas and pottery transforms into personal stories. TBD Pottery is not just a shop; it's a space infused with the passion and artistry of Jacob Cowan, the potter and owner whose hands shape more than just ceramics.

Clay Beginnings

Jacob’s journey with clay began in the lush landscapes of Hawaii, with a simple pinch pot monster crafted in first grade at HPA (Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy). Yet, it was during his formative high school years, under the tutelage of Mr. Disney at South Kitsap H.S., that his true connection with pottery emerged. It was a blend of admiration for his teacher and the exploration of various mediums that led him to his calling in the 3D art of pottery.

Artistic Inspirations

Browsing social media for sparks of creativity, Jacob finds his muse in the works of fellow artists. Though he's proficient in the techniques, his artistic identity is a journey — an evolving palette of styles he's still exploring and defining.

With each throw and shape, Jacob leaves a mark of his personal touch. His style, a reflection of his high school experiments with grants and freedom, now seeks a harmony where the form speaks louder than the glaze. His aspiration? For each piece to stand out even before the kiln’s fire works its magic.

The Dance

Pottery, for Jacob, is a fun dance with countless right steps. His approach to teaching embraces this, offering a variety of techniques to his students, each tailored to the individual’s instinctive touch with clay. The greatest challenge, however, was molding a hobby into a sustainable career — a feat he achieved by embracing the joy of teaching over the demands of being a production potter.

Each piece Jacob creates holds its place in his journey, but a bowl crafted three years ago stands out — a daily reminder of his growth and a testament to his enduring affection for his creations.

Creative Whims

Jacob’s approach to creation is spontaneous, an idea brewing in the back of his mind until it's ripe for realization. He’s drawn to the authentic charm of wood-fired pottery and prefers shaping his vision in its entirety, finding attachment not just in the process but also in the finish. In an era where the earth’s well-being is as crucial as the art itself, Jacob recycles every bit of his material. Clay from his classes finds new life in experiments or as donations, ensuring sustainability is at the core of TBD Pottery.

Collaborative Spirit

The local and global pottery communities are full of inspiration and support for Jacob. From his mentor, Mr. Disney, to the woodfire group led by Steve Sauer that he cherishes, collaboration is key. The experienced potter’s larger-than-life creations push him to explore his own limits.

Jacob’s advice to aspiring potters is practical: start with affordable equipment and seek the wisdom of the pottery community. The collective passion for the craft is a wellspring of knowledge and support. “Potters love to talk about pottery!” he says with a smile on his face.

Future Craft

Looking forward, Jacob’s eyes are set on blending the old with the new — integrating wood and metal with pottery to create a symphony of mediums.
