Crafting Community One Haircut at a Time

In the heart of Bremerton, Reuben Wilkins carved out a sanctuary not just with clippers and combs but with love and community. Born in California and adopted as a baby, his early years were all smiles, but soon the streets and their seductive chaos wrapped around him. The 80s were a haze of gang life, and a robbery charge led him to Folsom prison. Shot, stabbed, and lost in the abyss of drugs, Reuben's life seemed destined for darkness. Released from the confines of Folsom, homeless and adrift, he wandered parks and sofas until a friend’s kind gesture—a ticket to Bremerton—offered a new beginning.

What was meant to be a short visit to his sister became a turning point. In Bremerton, Reuben found more than a place to stay; he found a community and a sense of purpose.

Sanctuary of Acceptance

Reuben's life shifted in unexpected places. In the solitude of a prison cell, he discovered a latent talent for cutting hair. This skill later blossomed into a passion that carried him through the rough patches. By 2016, Reuben embraced barbering fully.

Reuben credits much of his success to his wife, Tovi, who was instrumental in his journey into the barbering business. When they married, Tovi already had an established salon. "I wouldn't be here without her," Reuben acknowledges, highlighting her vital role in his career.

Nestled in the heart of the 700 block of Pacific Avenue, affectionately known as "The 700 Club" by neighboring businesses, his shop became a special haven. His children grew up near here, attended Bremerton High, and the sense of belonging he found is now extended to everyone who enters his barbershop.

This barbershop is more than a place for trims and shaves; it’s a beacon of love, diversity, and inclusion. Reuben's chair is a throne of acceptance. “I care about all the hair I do,” he says. “I care about my clients and the people who walk through this door.” His reputation, built on word of mouth, is a testament to his unwavering commitment to his community.

During our interview, students streamed in, lending a hand around the shop. Normally closed on Wednesdays, the door was open, and the breeze flowed through, inviting folks to stop by. Everyone greeted Reuben with smiles, handshakes, and hugs, embodying the strong sense of community Reuben has nurtured.

A Tapestry of Diversity

The Barber & Beauty Lounge is a mosaic of cultures and colors. Black, Filipino, Mexican, White, and Biracial barbers work side by side, mirroring the rich diversity of Bremerton. Reuben ensures that his team can service anyone who walks through the door, celebrating the beauty of diversity in every snip and shave.

Triumphs and Trials

Running a business is a dance with challenges. COVID-19 forced the closure of his Bainbridge shop, and the city’s lack of resources for small businesses often left him feeling invisible and overlooked. Yet Reuben’s spirit remained unbroken.

His advice is simple yet profound: “Make people feel welcome.” The warmth and inclusivity of his shop reflect his philosophy. “If your environment doesn’t speak to people, how relevant are you?”

The Man Cave

What sets Reuben's barbershop apart is the deeply personal touch. Beyond haircuts, Reuben has cultivated a space of healing and connection. On the last Friday of each month, his shop transforms into a “man cave,” where men gather to discuss health, spirituality, and personal struggles. These sessions offer a safe haven for open conversation, addressing the often-unspoken emotional and personal challenges men face.

Reuben understands that men struggle with vulnerability, and through these gatherings, he provides a platform for them to express themselves freely. The atmosphere is relaxed, with music varying from Rasta to rock and roll, ensuring everyone feels included. These "man cave" sessions have become a cornerstone of Reuben's mission, highlighting his belief that a barbershop should be a place of sanctuary and support. Oh, and lots of banter of course!

In a glass case nestled in the corner of the shop, a collection of fine cigars, exquisite bottles of booze, and a handful of coins tell tales of lived experiences and hard-earned wisdom. Each cigar and bottle is more than a luxury item; they are tokens of shared stories and camaraderie. During the "man cave" sessions, Reuben opens this case to share these treasures with the men seeking community and connection. The cigars are lit, the drinks are poured, and the coins—symbols of Reuben's journey—are a reminder of the resilience and solidarity that the barbershop fosters.

Reuben invites all men to join the "man cave" sessions at the Barber & Beauty Lounge on the last Friday of each month. It’s an opportunity to connect, share, and grow together in a supportive and inclusive environment. Whether you’re looking to discuss health, spirituality, personal challenges, or simply seeking a place where you can be yourself, Reuben’s "man cave" is the perfect space to get in touch with yourself and others. Come and experience the unique atmosphere that Reuben has created—a place where every man can find acceptance and support.

Nurturing Growth and Sustainability

Reuben’s commitment to a clean, welcoming environment speaks to his dedication to his craft and community. He embraces change as a beautiful part of life and imparts this philosophy to aspiring barbers and stylists. As a mentor, Reuben is generous with his knowledge and experience, nurturing the next generation of barbers with the same care he gives his clients.

Dreams of Tomorrow

His commitment to community projects like the Marvin Williams Gala, DocLuvTheKids, and the Love Me For Me program reflects his unwavering dedication to giving back. Through the Marvin Williams Gala, Reuben supports local youth and celebrates their achievements, fostering a sense of pride and ambition in the next generation. DocLuvTheKids sees Reuben and his team providing free haircuts to children in need, ensuring they feel confident and cared for. The Love Me For Me program, aimed at promoting self-acceptance and inner beauty, aligns perfectly with Reuben's philosophy of inclusivity and love.

Reuben’s future plans are not just about business expansion; they are about creating a legacy of empowerment and support. He dreams of a world where every individual, regardless of their background, can walk into a barbershop and feel valued, seen, and uplifted. Through his visionary efforts, Reuben is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future, one haircut at a time.
